My name is Sarah Atwell and I’m a resident of Middletown
(after living in Middlefield for 23 years). I left the area like many after
high school and returned after college. At age 26, I was diagnosed with Stage IIA breast cancer (invasive as well as DCIS, which is non invasive). I had all of my surgeries and treatment done at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT.

I often refer to my life in two stages: BC (before cancer) and AD (after diagnosis). I blame my chemo brain when I can’t remember whether I interacted with someone during the BC or AD period of my life. Cancer drew a line in the sand and there was no looking back to my BC life where I worried about petty things like any other 20 something. It is truly an understatement when someone says that cancer changes your life. I’ll be sharing my cancer story with readers each month and welcome any questions or comments.

I earned a BA in history from Wesley College in Dover, DE in 2005 and a MALS in social science from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT in 2009. I am currently fulfilling my nursing prerequisites for an associate's degree in nursing at Goodwin College in East Hartford, CT.

I enjoy volunteering with several non profit organizations, including the Durham Historical Society, the Durham Fair and the Daughters of the American Revolution. I am a Reach to Recovery volunteer with the American Cancer Society and I enjoy speaking on behalf of the group on breast cancer related topics whenever they need someone.
