The use of an aquatic herbicide is only a temporary solution - do some online research and you willRead More find that the Universities of Wisconsin and Minnesota have run extensive studies on chemically treating lake areas containing the pondweed (Potamogeton crispus) also found at Lake Beseck; the herbicide reduces but does not eliminate the pondweed, and the following year's bloom is more intense (only the strong survive and reproduce). Before we start dumping chemicals into our kids' swimming water, let's really think about the longitudinal impact of an herbicide treatment. Do we want to treat the water every year? Will we use a more potent chemical each year since the bloom will be more intense as time goes on as a result of the chemical treatment? Our neighbors to the north successfully use manual rakes to remove (ongoing, not permanently) the invasive milfoil that infests their waters. I don't live in the Lake Beseck area, but would volunteer my time to help rake if it meant ensuring safe swimming water for our kids and safe fishing water for our neighbors.

What will happen once the lake is lowered? Will herbicide treatment then be more effective. WillRead More we attempt to put a stop to lawn fertilizing? Will we seek to have the state close the boat ramp to out of town boaters. Will we seek the state to treat their lake? Many questions that need answered.

I would suggest to parents to donate a book to the classroom or school library in their child's nameRead More to celebrate the child's birthday, or other significant event, instead of sending in cupcakes or other sweets.
