CRHS SOCCER : Girls Fall in State Tournament

CRHS Girls bounced from States on PKs. They fall short in the last game, but not in accomplishments.

The Third ranked CRHS Lady Devils Soccer Team was host to 11th seeded Old Saybrook in the blustery cold on Friday afternoon on the home turf of Coginchaug Regional High School.

Coginchaug was in the driver's seat for most of the match, but could not best the outstanding Goal Keeper for the visiting Rams.  Coginchaug's Goal Keeper, Kara Mather was having a good day herself.  She and the rest of the defense played impressively in turning away Old Saybrook's threats and starting the plays back in the other direction.  The midfield maintained possession and created 27 scoring opportunities throughout the match.

Neither team could get the ball into the net.  Through 80 minutes of regulation and 2 ten minute overtimes the game remained scoreless.  For the second straight tournament the girls would be ousted on the short end of the penalty kick round.

It was a difficult way to end the season for a team with so much potential.

Some might look at the 2 tournament losses and say the season was a failure.  But to do so would be a tremendous mistake.  What this team accomplished is incredible and these girls deserve a lot of credit.

There are 12 teams in the Shoreline Conference, they finished the regular season alone in first place.  They separated themselves over second place Portland with a thrilling 2-1 victory in September.  Only 4 teams qualify for the Shoreline tournament, CRHS was ranked first and lost in the penalty kick tie-breaker round.  There are 44 teams in Class S, they finished the regular season ranked 3rd.  Of those 44 teams, 21 qualify for the State Tournament and they were among the final 8; losing again on PKs.  There are a total of 114 Girls High School teams in the state of Connecticut.  Coginchaug finished the regular season ranked 8th.  (source:  www.maxpreps.com)

Those are impressive numbers and the girls should be proud of themselves.

Head Coach Megan Kavanaugh shares these sentiments:  This senior class has been part of the winningest class in school history.  They were phenomenal leaders both on and off the field.  Each one of them has contributed greatly to the growth of this program and I could not feel more honored to have been able to work with such a strong, capable, and wonderful group of young student athletes. I, along with the entire Coginchaug Soccer family, will miss these 8 outstanding young women:
#27 Victoria Buonanni
#14 Morgan Kuehnle
#2 Megan Sirois
#4 Alison Luther
GK Kara Mather
#16 Kasi Whitaker
#15 Alexis Johnson
#5 Kim Romanoff
