CRHS SOCCER : Girls Back to their Winning ways

Girls team improves to 9-2. Boys getting closer.

After losing 2 very close matches last week, the Lady Devils found their stride again in this week's contests.

On Tuesday the girls took the field a home against the Cougars of Haddam-Killingworth.  In a match that was closer than most people expected.  The game was knotted in a scoreless tie at halftime.

Senior Captain Victoria Buonanni struck first in the second half, from a perfectly played ball from Sophomore Center Mid Jess Drop.  H-K wasted no time with their answer and the score was even at 1.  Vic scored her second of the game to pull CRHS ahead once again, but with less than 5 minutes left H-K leveling the score once again.

The match went to overtime, and it took the girls less than one minute to break the tie and seal the victory.  Senior Kim Romanoff took matters into her own hands.  She won the ball 40 yards away from goal.  She started a breakaway, taking on 3 defenders and leaving them all in her wake.  She put a nice move on the keeper and wound up with an empty net in front of her.  She was sure not to miss.

On Friday night, the girls hit the road to take on North Branford.  CRHS was in control of the match, but were not able to find the net.  The Coginchaug defense completely shut down any North Branford attack.  Again, the score was 0-0 at halftime.

Less than 3 minutes into the second half, Vic Buonanni out ran the defenders and scored the only goal CRHS would need.  It seemed that CRHS was off to the races, but the half played out tentatively, and the score held at 1-0 with 7 minutes to play.

Kim Romanoff scored her second important goal in as many games when she took the ball down the right sideline and fired from distance.  The ball cleared the leaping NB keeper and tucked in under the crossbar.  This finally took the pressure off CRHS, they could sense the win.  Vic Buonanni added another goal just minutes later to leave no doubt that the CRHS girls would improve their record to 9-2.

The CRHS boys traveled to North Branford the night before.  The boys line-up is still missing a few key elements.  They've been close in many of their recent losses, but just not able to get the goals they need.  They held North Branford scoreless for 75 of the 80 minutes of a High School match.  In soccer, at that point it's anyone's game, and NB took advantage when they put a long range shot on goal, and it found the net.

Both teams travel to Deep River to face the always dangerous Warriors of Valley Regional.  Boys play Monday at 3:45 and the Girls play on Tuesday, also 3:45.
