Madison's own Mac Bohonnon pulled out an impressive fifth place Monday during his inaugural Olympic appearance at the men’s aerials event of the 2014 Sochi Games.

The 18-year-old USSA Team Academy student landed a full double full full, in front of an enthusiastic audience that included his family, according to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association website. The jump placed him in the top three during the second final. He was in fourth when Guangpu Qi of China landed an impressive jump and prevented Bohonnon from advancing to the four-man superfinal.

Anton Kushnir of Belarus earned the gold medal, the second aerials gold for his country at the games. Australian David Morris took home the silver with China’s Zongyang Jia bronze.

Last month, Bohonnon was named the 2014 FIS World Cup Rookie of the Year, a week after his career-first World Cup podium in Val St. Come, Quebec that also earned him a spot on the Olympic Team. He was the only man competing in aerials for Team USA.

Bohonnon said of his performance, "If you had told me in October that I would be at the Olympics I would have had a hard time believing you. And then if you told me I would get fifth I definitely wouldn't have believed you."

He added, "I was able to prove to myself that on the Olympic stage, with the most pressure, I can stay in my routine and not get too worked up. I've trained for this for six years and it's an unbelievable feeling to see it pay off. Especially since the field here is insanely competitive."
