Video: Memorial, Lyman Now Powered by the Sun

Solar panels will reduce energy costs and serve as teaching tool for District 13.

The installation of solar panels at Memorial Middle School and Lyman Elementary School is now complete.

On Monday, June 20, school officials joined representatives from DBS Energy Inc. of Berlin, to formally unveil the Solar Photovoltaic Installation at Memorial Middle School in Middlefield (see photos for solar panels at Lyman Elementary School).

Partially funded by the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, the solar panels will produce approximately 60,000 kilowatt hours annually, or enough electricty to meet the energy needs of twelve residential homes.

The solar panels will allow each school to reduce its reliance on the traditional power grid operated by Connecticut Light and Power. During periods when the solar panels produce more electricity than is required by the schools, the excess electricity is delivered back to the grid.

The solar panels will produce significant energy savings to the district over time, said Superintendent of Schools Susan Viccaro.

Memorial Principal Kevin Brough and Lyman Principal Karen Brimecombe said the technology will also serve as a tool in the classroom, as students learn about issues related to energy.
