Korn School Students Draw Up Posters for Fire Prevention Month

The third-grade class demonstrated its knowledge of fire safety.

The below posting is a press release.

October is Fire Prevention Month. This year’s theme is Prevent Kitchen Fires. Under the guidance of Miss Pantalena, a third grade teacher at Francis E. Korn School who is also an EMT/Fire Fighter for Company 8 in Wallingford, the boys and girls took part in a poster contest for the Middlefield Fire Department.

The boys and girls learned helpful tips such as; don’t get distracted while cooking, make sure you can reach the counter if you are going to help in the kitchen, have a parent help you cook and always have a working smoke detector and fire extinguisher nearby.

All of the 61 students that entered won a goody bag for displaying knowledge about how to stay safe. One winner per age group won an additional prize and will have the poster displayed for a full year in the fire department. That winner was Sydney Stone from fourth grade.

Some of Korn’s other winners are Sydney Hovenstine and Carly Benbow from fourth grade won second place. Natalie Ness, Emma Ostrander and Gesami Vazquez from third grade won second place from third grade.
