Four Coginchaug Seniors to be Inducted Into National Honors Society

The students will be inducted into the NHS in April.

Four seniors at Coginchaug Regional High School have been selected to be part of the National Honor Society.

Hunter Courchesne, Julia Orosz, Jennifer Skaaning, and Jack Temple met and/or exceeded the standards for scholarship, leadership, service, and character, said Amy Jacques-Purdy, a social students teacher at CRHS.

The four students join the 28-member organization now and will take part in a formal induction ceremony on April 28 at 7 p.m. in the CRHS auditorium.

To be eligible for membership, students must first meet the academic requirement of a 3.333 or B+ weighted average, Jacques-Purdy said.

If they meet that requirement, students are notified that they are eligible and may choose to complete membership forms which provide evidence regarding the other standards.

Through student forms and written responses as well as teacher feedback, the Faculty Council (five teachers named by the building principal), determine whether or not students have met and/or exceeded the standards for leadership, service, and character.

Leadership has a broad definition to include "elected" or "appointed" roles in co-curricular activities but also patterns of leadership in the classroom.  Students are expected to accumulate thirty or more hours of community service as well.  The standards are clearly defined by the National Constitution of the National Honor Society, the Faculty Council applies them.
