Coginchaug Boys' Split Opening Games

By Alan Pease

Gone are all of the starters from last year’s team – Erikson Wasyl, Ethan Donecker, Brock Hoyt, Alec Corazzini and Jake Tietlebaum have all graduated, along with key contributors from last year, Sam Baker, Kevin Gawron and Luke Bogdanski.  The only returning player with any meaningful minutes from last season is Mike Bongiorno, and even he was the third man off the bench.  So the objective this season is to be competitive, and strive to make both the Shoreline and State post season tournaments.  To do so would be a huge accomplishment for this inexperienced team.

On Wednesday, December 12th, the Devils travelled to Hyde, keeping the game close through three periods, trailing only by three points.  But in the fourth period, the Howling Wolves superior speed and athleticism came to the forefront, allowing Hyde to come away with a 49-37 win.  I unfortunately could not make the game, and as of yet, have no stats.

On Saturday, December 15th, the Devils hosted the Noises of Hale Ray.  The visitors jumped to an early lead, but Coginchaug finally took the lead for good on an Alex Kotrady free throw shortly before the half.  Coginchaug went on a bit of a run early in the second half, and led 36-21 with 2:30 left in the third, but a foul, a turnover and a couple of missed Blue Devil shots led to a couple of free throws and a couple of treys, as the Noises kept the game close.

In the final period, the Devils made ten of eleven free throws, just enough to negate some crazy three point shooting by the visiting Noises, who connected on five shots from beyond the arc in the period.

Jackson Doyle led the Devils with 13 points, adding nine rebounds and four assisits.  Devin Rodrigue scored eleven points, and also had nine rebounds.  Jack Granger scored nine points, and Mike Bongiorno scored seven,

Coginchaug is 1-1.  They play at Westbrook on Monday the 17th, host North Branford on Thursday the 20th, and host Windsor Locks on Saturday the 20th.
