Region 13 School Budget Passes

The proposed $36.6 million budget for the Coginchaug school district was approved handedly in referendums in Durham, while the package only won by four votes in Middlefield.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you your vote doesn’t count — because every last vote sure did make a difference in Middlefield on Tuesday.

Residents of both towns approved the proposed $36.6 million school budget, with the final tally being 666 in favor of the total package and 475 against.

In Durham, the results were 489 people voting “yes” and 302 people “no,” according to the Town of Durham’s website.

And in Middlefield the budget just barely passed, with 177 “yes” votes against 173 “no” votes, said moderator Allison Dodge.

This means the budget will go into effect for the 2013-14 school year, as both towns needed to approve the budget.

Because the budget passed by less than 1 percent in Middlefield it falls within the parameters of a recount, Dodge said. But that would depend on someone challenging the results and Dodge said she did not see that happening.
