House OK's Sunday Deer Hunting Bill

If passed by the Senate, deer hunting on private land with a bow and arrow will be permitted starting in October.

Connecticut bow hunters would be able to shoot a deer on Sunday under a bill approved this week by House lawmakers.

HB 5412 would lift a ban on Sunday hunting by permitting bow and arrow hunting on private property.

“This bill allows for the humane culling of the deer population in Connecticut,” said State Rep. Linda M. Gentile, House Chair of the Environment Committee.   “Deer cause significant damage to property and agriculture and bring with them the danger of Lyme disease.”

The measure passed 107-19, according to the Hartford Courant, with all opposition coming from House Democrats. The bill still needs Senate approval.

In order to hunt on Sunday, deer hunters would need to meet certain conditions; Hunting cannot take place within 40 yards of a blazed hiking trail; Hunters would need written consent of the private property owner; Hunters would need a DEEP bow and arrow permit.

If enacted, the bill would take effect October 1, 2013.
