Southington police said 19-year-old William A. Mazo was driving the vehicle, a 2003 Chervolet Avalache, around 3 p.m. Thursday when he veered left over the yellow lines and across the northbound lanes before leaving the road and striking a tree.

Mazo died on scene, police said. His passenger, 20-year-old David Lanning of Middlefield, also suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken by Lifestar to Hartford Hospital where he remains in serious condition.

The cause of the accident remains unknown. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, police said. The case remains under investigation by the department’s Accident Reconstruction Team.

Any witnesses or those with information are asked to contact Officer Jason Plourde at (860) 621-0101.
