24 books to read after THE HUNGER GAMES!

The next highly anticipated Young Adult movie is coming out this week!  Many of you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about, and that is CATCHING FIRE!  We have 3 events planned at the library next week to celebrate:

Tuesday – Catching Fire book discussion, 6pm

Wednesday – The Hunger Games movie will be shown downstairs in the library at 3:30pm

Wednesday – Catching Fire Prerelease Party.  We’re having an all out, Hunger Games competition and party!  Tributes will create a Hunger Games t-shirt, compete in physical challenges, and answer trivia questions.  The Victor will take home a $20 movie gift card so they can go see the movie for free, and have a snack!  This is a registration event, so if you’re interested please call the library (860-349-9544)or stop in to sign up. 

But after all that is over and you’ve seen the movie you’re in for a long wait until the next movie comes out.  So, for my fellow Hunger Games fans, let’s explore some similar books that you can check out of the library!

The Hunger Games series is part of a subgenre of books known as dystopian fiction.  This is a reversal of a utopian or perfect society.  Specifically dystopian fiction involves a society that should be more perfect, but has many flaws.  Often this includes a totalitarian or oppressive government that oppresses either some or all of its population.  Wikipedia defines dystopian fiction as

“The utopia and its offshoot, the dystopia, are genres of literature that explore social and political structures. Utopian fiction is the creation of an ideal society, or utopia, as the setting for a novel. Dystopian fiction (sometimes referred to as apocalyptic literature) is the opposite: creation of an utterly horrible or degraded society that is generally headed to an irreversible oblivion, or dystopia.[1] Many novels combine both, often as a metaphor for the different directions humanity can take in its choices, ending up with one of two possible futures. Both utopias and dystopias are commonly found in science fiction and other speculative fiction genres, and arguably are by definition a type of speculative fiction.”
