TD Bank Holds “Wow!Zone” Programs For Kids At The Killingworth Library

An opportunity for kids to become financially savvy over April break

Do you “wanna be a billionaire”? Well the Killingworth Library just may have the programs to start you off with a successful game plan for money management.

Representatives from TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®, will hold two workshops for fourth and fifth grade students: “Budgeting and Saving” and “Introduction to Credit”. High schoolers who aspire to be financially savvy will also be offered a workshop covering both understanding credit and the stock market.

In Budgeting and Saving, kids will learn the concept of budgeting and calculating simple interest on a savings account. The activities rely on a variety of interactive and visual formats which are both interesting and fun. The class will be held on April 21 at 10:30 am.

In Introduction to Credit, the concept of credit will be introduced and students will be allowed to explore credit on a meaningful and concrete level through activities and examples. Each activity guides students in becoming aware of how credit is obtained, retained, and used in a responsible manner. The class will be held on April 21 at 1:30 pm.

The high school workshop on credit and securities focuses on how to obtain credit and maintain good practices with credit and a good credit rating, as well as provides the necessary content background to prepare students for participating in a stock market game, including how to read stock market information. The class will be held on April 20 at 10:30 am.

All workshops are conducted through the institution’s WOW!Zone program, TD Banks’s financial literacy curriculum. The goal is to provide both children and teens with information about money, saving, investing and banking. The programs are designed to be educational, fun and interactive.

TD Bank WOW!Zone lesson plans are written to meet the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards, and cover topics such as the value of money, the difference between saving and spending, planning a budget, balancing a checkbook, and creating an investment. Age appropriate activites for grades K – 12 support each lesson.

According to TD Bank Retail Market Manager Heidi Capodanno, “Employees voluntarily train for 8 hours to become certified instructors or teachers can download from our website www.tdbank.com/wowzone to use on their own."

TD Bank has been conducting WOW!Zone training for over 20 years.

Adults who sit in on the workshops can learn as well. Says Capodanno, “At TD Bank, we think it is very important to educate the next generation of Americans EVERY DAY about savings, so they're financial savvy for years to come!  WOW!Zone training is for children, teens and adults.”

The training, she explains, “is interactive with graphic visuals to enhance learning. Our online components offer animated stories for kids, virtual stock market for young investors, lesson plans for educators, and a game room for kids of all ages.”

All lessons, which run between 40 minutes and one hour, are limited to 20 students. Fourth and fifth grade students are welcome to attend one or both sessions if they are interested.
