The Sun Shines on Solarize Durham

The town recently reached tier 5 pricing, according to First Selectman Laura Francis, which means that participants will receive the lowest price available. An informational workshop will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at the library.

Durham residents have embraced a state pilot program offering steep discounts to homeowners who agree to solarize their homes.

In July, Durham was one of four towns selected to participate in Solarize CT, along with Portland, Westport and Fairfield, but to date Durham is the only town to reach tier 5 pricing, which is available until Dec. 14.

Homeowners who sign up for Solarize Durham between now and the deadline will be able to take advantage of discounted rates through solar installer BeFree Solar.

Durham residents already signed up to the program will produce about 260 kW worth of energy, according to Francis.

Francis said the town has also directly benefited from the Solarize Durham program through additional building department revenues in the amount of about $5,000.

If you're interested in signing up for Solarize Durham another workshop will be held this evening at the Durham Public Library at 7 p.m.

In addition to learning about the Solarize Connecticut program, the workshop will walk homeowners through the basics of solar power, including everything from the technology itself to the various financing options.
