HK Recreation Department Fall Offerings

Young Chefs of HK

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a new program this fall. Young Chefs is a unique culinary experience which will offer cooking classes to children in a safe environment that will encourage discovery and creativity. Class is for boys ad girls in grades K – 4.  It  meets on Wednesdays, from 4:15 – 5:45 pm at the HK HS Room B-112. Each visit will be a new experience with fresh monthly themes and exciting new programs. Students sharpen their skills by employing the mantra, "Mise en Place" which, in the cooking world, translates into "Everything in its place." Young chefs will learn basics in kitchen safety, proper food handling, food preparation, cooking and baking techniques, presentation, and so much more! At the end of each workshop the young chef will leave with a packet of info on how to recreate what we made in class and tasty treats for their family to try. The fee is $30 each class and includes food (non-residents add $10).

Workshops include: 
Session 1: September 21 - Get a head start back to school and learn all about great after school energy snacks. Learn how to make delicious home-made granola bars and beautiful fruit and cheese kabobs. 
Session 2: October 26 - Gear up for ghosts, goblins and ghouls! We will be working with fondant this month and make some spooky holiday decorations to top cupcakes with. 
Session 3: November 16 - Get ready for Thanksgiving and make turkey cookie treats. We will start the class by making pita pizzas and while they bake, we will create delicious edible turkeys.

Horseback Riding

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Horseback Riding Lessons this spring for ages 6 & up.  Classes run for 6 weeks.  The fee is $195 (non-residents add $10).   Participants can go on either Mondays , September 12 – October 17 or Tuesdays, September 13 – October 18 from 5:30 – 7 pm. There is a max. of 4 participants per time slot. There will also be a Saturday time slot from 11 – 12:30 pm from September 10 – October 15. 

This beginner horseback riding class will cover grooming, saddling, riding, safety skills, as well as fun games. Lessons are geared for the novice rider. All equipment will be provided. English saddle will be used. More advanced students who have taken this class before are welcome.  Please note - instructor may have to pair participants up according to age and ability. Classes are held at the Dream Meadow Farm at 412 Candlewood Hill Road in Higganum.  

Cheerleading - "Roamer Robot"

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation is offering Cheerleading this fall. Students will learn a new jump each week as well as how to base a stunt and low-level lift. The group will practice motions and techniques of tight straight movements. A short cheer routine to music will be worked on weekly. Some tumbling will also be incorporated. Please wear shorts, leotard or shirt that can be tucked in. Class meets on Wednesdays at the HK New Middle School Cafeteria.  The program is for students ages 7 – 11 and will meet from 5:30 - 6:15 pm (Advanced) and from 6:15 – 7:00 pm (Beginner).  Session 1 is from September 21 – October 19 and Session 2 is from November 2 – December 7 (No 11/23). The fee is $60 each session. 

Zumbatomic!

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Zumba for kids in grades K – 2 this fall!  Class will be offered on Tuesdays at HES from September 27 – November 1 and Wednesdays at BES from September 28 – November 9.  The time is from 3:30 – 4:30 pm. The fee is $30. be from Non-residents can register for an additional $10.   

Zumbatomic is a fun healthy program designed for children using the Zumba Fitness concept. Classes are packed with specially choreographed, kid-friendly routines and are all to music kids love such as hip hop, reggaeton, cumbia, and more. Music and games make exercise fun! Please bring a water bottle and wear sneakers.  Latin inspired dance/fitness crazy you don’t want to miss.  Traditional Latin dances are mixed with modern music and easy to follow choreography to give a great and fun cardio workout. Stretching, abs, and toning will also be added. Anyone can Zumba – no dance experience necessary!  Change you mindset from “I have to go work out” to “I get to go work out!”.

Karate Kids

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Karate for boys and girls ages 5.5 - 12.  A session will be held at Haddam Elementary School Gym on Mondays from September 12 – December 12 (No 10/10, 10/31) at HES and on Wednesdays at Killingworth Elementary School Gym from September 14 – December 7 (No 11/23) at KES.  The classes meet from 3:30 to 5:00 pm.  The fee is $65.  Non-residents can sign up for an additional $10. 

Children will be introduced to Washin-Ryu Karate-Do, a unique form of traditional Japanese Karate; and will learn the meaning of self-respect, respect for others, self-discipline, and concentration.  Mr. Moan will also talk to the kids about safety awareness and how to avoid abductions. The instructor, Mike Moan, is a 7th Degree Black Belt. 

Creative Art - "Roamer Robot"

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a Creative Art class this fall. Children in grades K – 4 will explore a world of creativity through a variety of different projects from wood crafts to paper art and make fun fall projects. Class will meet on Mondays from 3:30 – 4:45 pm at Killingworth Elementarry School, Thursdays from 3:25 – 4:30 pm at Haddam Elementary School, and on Fridays from 3:30 – 4:45 pm at Burr Elementary School. Classes begin the week of September 26th and November 14th. The fee is $48 per each four-week session (non-residents add $10). Kids should bring a smock or shirt that can get messy. 

Kid’s Focus on Fitness tc "Roamer Robot"

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Focus on Fitness for children in grades 1 - 4. This program will be held on Mondays, September 12 – October 24 (No 10/10) from 3:30 – 4:30 pm at Killingworth Elementary School Gym. A second session will be held from November 7 – December 12.  The fee is $75 each session (non-residents add $10).

Kids - get off those couches and into the gym. This exciting after school class is designed to bring fun and fitness together under one roof. The workout is set up in a "circuit style" format - a series of exercise stations that are set up around the gym. Kids will get a cardio workout, increase strength and endurance, and learn a sense of "team" through partner and group work. Fitness and running games will also be incorporated to add some extra fun. Children's Music Program 

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a new program this Fall. The Children’s Music Workshop will be offered for children in grades K – 4.  Class will meet on Tuesdays at BES fron September 20 – October 25, Tuesdays at HES from November 1 – December 13 (No 11/8) and on on Wednesdays at KES from September 21  - November 2 (No 11/12) from 3:30 – 4:25 pm.  The fee is $60 (non-residents add $10).  This program is designed to introduce children to the basics of music such as singing in tune and performing correct rhythm by using games, a variety of instruments, dance and songs. Fischer Music School instructors believe that all children have great musical capabilities and when exposed to music education at an early age, children can be inspired to take their musical gifts to a higher level. Kids will participate in jam sessions, sing, make music with egg shakers and kazoos, hear lots of live guitar and saxophone, dance, play the tambourine, learn about basic music notation, watch slide shows, and have plenty of silly fun!

Archery

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Archery this fall on Wednesdays. There will be an Beginner class from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, an Intermediate / Advanced class from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at the HK High School Cafeteria.  Class is for participants ages 8 - 17. Class meets from September 21 – October 19.  A second session will be held from November 2 – December 7 (No 11/23).  The fee is $60. Non-residents can register for an additional $10. 


Archery teaches patience, concentration, attention to detail while allowing room for individual advancement. Being an individual sport, children will have fun while learning the fundamentals of the sport at their own pace. Students will enjoy shooting bows while learning history and the proper terminology of the sport.  Classes are taught with a strong emphasis on safety and proper shooting technique. There will be a "Scoring Day" where students may choose to keep score as an assessment of their progress from the session.  Individual equipment such as bows, arrows, and armguards are provided.

Crossroads Driving School - "Roamer Robot"

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation is offering a Driver’s Ed program this spring.  Participants must be 16 years old before the start of class. Option 1 is a Full Program that includes 30 hours of classroom as well as the safe driving and alcohol program along with 8 hours of behind-the-wheel. The fee is $475 (non-residents add $10). Option 2 is a Classroom only option, where participants can take the 30 hours of class, but no driving. Includes the Safe Driving portion. The fee is $250 (non-residents add $10). Option 3 is the Safe Driving and Drug and Alcohol Program, which is the 8 hour course that fulfills the requirement of the State of CT for license applicants who took a Home Training Program. This course is required for all drivers, including those who are over the age of 18. The fee for this course is $125.  

Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the HK HS room C-220.  The classroom dates will be held from September 20 – November 17 (No 9/22, 9/29, 10/13, 11/8). There will be a Safe Driving Program on September 20, 27, and October 4. Participants can choose to go from 3:00 – 5:00 pm or 6:30 – 8:30 pm. There is a Parent/Student informational class from 6:30 – 8:30 pm on September 15th at the HK HS Lower Media which is required for students and parents to attend. 

SAT 101 – PREP WORKSHOPS - "Roamer Robot"

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering SAT Prep Worshops for High School students. The session will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Session 1 will be September 20 & 22; Session 2 is October 25 & 27 nad Session 3 will meet on November 15 & 17.  The class will meet from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. The fee is $100 each session.  Class  will be held in the HK HS Room C-212. 

Need helpful hints and strategies for the SAT and only a few hours to spare?  We have the course for you. Whether you have taken the SAT or it is your first time, this course is designed to provide helpful hints and strategies for both the math and verbal sections of the SAT.  Each session consists of two hours of math and two hours of writing and reading, that are taught by experienced certified teachers. Please bring your calculator.
