Durham Issues West Nile Alert

Health officials urge residents to remain vigilant against mosquitoes despite colder weather.

On Thursday, the Town of Durham issued a health alert over the recent discovery of the West Nile virus in town.

The discovery that birds found dead at White Farm had West Nile was first reported in the Hartford Courant and susequently last week.

"Residents should continue to be vigilant with respect to prevention of mosquito bites. Although frost hit the Durham area earlier in the month of October, not all mosquito habitats were impacted. Mosquito activity has lessened but has not ceased," the alert says.

Health officials say animals are susceptible to West Nile Virus and precautions should be taken to protect them as well.
