Daily Five: Schools Closed Today Due to Storm

Five things to know for Friday, March 8, 2013.

 

1. What's the Weather? Lingering snow before 4 p.m., then a chance of rain and snow showers. High near 38. Breezy, with a north wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Tonight: Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 24. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph.

2. Schools Closed Today Schools in Durham and Middlefield are closed today due to the inclement weather. It is the eighth time school officials have been forced to cancel classes this year due to the weather.

3. $1,000,000 Winner Stephan Pagano of Durham recently took home the $1 million Class Lotto jackpot. Pagano's ticket, which he bought in Southington, matched all six of the winning Classic Lotto numbers drawn on Feb. 26. He'll take home $537,330 after taxes.

4. Weekend Events There are lots of great events on tap this weekend, including Can U Sing? auditions in nearby Clinton or Prepare Your Garden for Spring at the Durham Public Library. A few other ideas are the Ham Shoot at the New Haven Raccoon Club on Sunday or the Spaghetti Dinner hosted by the Durham Middlefield Exchange Club.
