Daily Five: It's A Peach, Only With Less Fuzz

Five things to know for Tuesday, July 17, 2012.

 

1. What's the Weather? Mostly sunny, with a high near 94. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 72. Courtesy of the National Weather Service.

2. Pick-Your-Own Nectarines Long before became famous for its apples, peaches were the dominant crop of Middlefield's largest farm, with about 800 acres dedicated to the fuzzy fruit. Things changed in 1917, when a deep freeze destroyed the peach crop and Lyman's transitioned to apples.

Why is this important? Well, because on Monday, Lyman Orchards welcomed visitors to pick-their-own nectarines for the first time this season. Nectarines, a smooth variety of the peach, are mohagany in color and taste just as good, if not better, we think.

3. Bathrooms at Coginchaug Athletic Fields The newly formed Field House Building Committee is scheduled to meet for the first time tonight to discuss the progress of a bathroom facility at the high school's athletic complex.

This spring, Durham's Planning and Zoning Commission so the building could be completed.

Tonight's meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Central Office.

4. Voter Registration Coming Soon  will hold an evening registration session to enroll new voters from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at the Durham Public Library.

The Registrars will also be available to hear requests by persons removed from the preliminary registry voting list to add their names back to the list. August 9 is the last day to register by mail in order to vote in the August 14 Democratic or Republican primary. 

Residents not currently enrolled who wish to vote August 14, may enroll in person up until 12:00 noon on August 13. Voters who wish to change from Unaffiliated to a Democratic or Republican party affiliation for the August 14  primary may do so in person until noon on August 13. Residents should appear in person with identification. 

5. Credit Union Donates $500 to Local Group American Eagle Federal Credit Union recently donated $500 to the Connecticut Forest and Park Association, which is located in Rockfall (along Route 66).

Throughout the month of May, American Eagle FCU held a Go Green promotion with a goal to reduce the number of paper statements mailed every month. The campaign featured a pledge to donate $1 to the Connecticut Forest and Parks Association for every member that enrolled in e-Statements. During May, nearly 500 members signed up to receive their monthly statements electronically. The $500 donation from the Credit Union will help support forest and park conservation efforts across the state.
