Lake Communities are Special Places

For instance, lovely Lake Beseck sits pristine, anchoring the small town of Middlefield with its residents

For most folks, our small community combining Durham and Middlefield is off the beaten path. Yet there is much to be celebrated here, nestled in such a vital and central pocket of Connecticut. For instance, lovely Lake Beseck sits pristine, anchoring the small town of Middlefield with its residents numbering just over 4000.

A quiet residential lake popular with anglers and boaters, Lake Beseck is 116 acres with 3 miles of shoreline. Measuring just under 1 mile long and 1/4 mile wide, the lake has an average depth of 12 feet. The lake itself has a history that goes back to 1846 when it was first damned. It is fed by Beseck River, as well as several brooks and bottom springs. Today it is owned and maintained by the Department of Environmental Protection. Situated beside the Mattabesset Trail offering miles of hiking, beautiful Lake Beseck is central to a rich and close-knit community of residents. Here is an excerpt from a blogger, waxing nostalgic about Lake Beseck and the special place it holds for her. To read more, here is a link to her blog.

"Yes, it appears to be in the middle of "nowhere" and that is exactly how you feel. It's within 5 miles of big stores, restaurants, etc., but when you are in the backyard or enjoying the relaxation and fun of kneeboarding or skiing behind the boat on the 1 mile loop of Lake Beseck, you feel like there isn't a care in the world beyond Rosemary Lane."

If the allure of lake living draws you in, you might want to explore some opportunites to have a lake home of your own. Maybe these opportunities are more like adventures requiring imagination, hard work and a financial commitment, but in the end you will have created a lifestyle to savor and a home that is uniquely your own.
