Tax-Free Shopping Starts Sunday

Shoppers get tax break on clothing and footwear purchases under $300 from Aug. 21-27.

If you've put off back-to-school shopping your procrastination could pay off this week.

The state's annual Tax Free Week begins today and runs through Saturday, August 27.

The seven-day holiday exempts individual items of clothing and footwear priced under $300 from the sales tax. Exempt clothing and shoes are generally considered essential day-to-day wear. Special clothing or footwear primarily designed for athletic activity or protective use, accessories, and jewelry do not qualify for the exemption.

"The tax-free week is a welcomed benefit for parents, students and businesses as well. It saves consumers millions of dollars," said Sean Moore, President of the Meriden Chamber of Commerce.

"It’s also important to note that the tax free program also applies to items placed on layaway as well.  This is great week to use layaway again," he added.

This year’s Sales Tax Holiday -- initially eliminated under Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's original budget plan -- is projected to save shoppers as much as $7.2 million, according to the state's Department of Revenue Services.

“This is a great opportunity for back-to-school shoppers and we expect it to be a big hit this year," said DRS Commissioner Kevin B. Sullivan. "It’s also a good way to help Connecticut’s retailers attract customers and put more money back into the state economy."

In addition to purchases shoppers take home, items placed on layaway and rentals of clothing or footwear under $300 are also tax-free during the Sales Tax Holiday Week. For purchases of items costing $300 or more, sales tax is calculated on the full cost of the item.
