House Fire Destroys Garage on Cherry Hill Road in Middlefield

A fire destroyed a garage and two vehicles at a home on Cherry Hill Road in Middlefield on Saturday afternoon, according to fire officials.

The fire at 329 Cherry Hill Road was reported shortly before 6 p.m.

Crews from Middlefield, Durham, Westfield and South Fire District responded to the scene while a crew from South Meriden covered Middlefield's firehouse, Middlefield assistant fire chief Bill Konefal said.

A family living at the home was inside when fire alarms went off, he said. The family was able to make it out safely and call 911.

"It was a close call," Konefal said.

The fire was knocked down quickly and contained to the garage, although parts of the home have smoke damage. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Konefal said additional firefighters were called to the blaze due to the extreme weather conditions which quickly left firefighters exhausted. No firefighters were injured fighting the fire however.
