Less government is better government

Ralph Waldo Emerson said “the less government we have the better”.  I agree.  I think Killingworth is a community that espouses Emerson’s philosophy in that statement.  When ever government passes legislation or tries to regulate, “we” usually give up some of our rights and it also costs us money.

Over the past few months there have been Community discussions on issues that affect individual rights.  One discussion was on banning smoking in our parks.  The Republicans on the BOS voted against this.  Their concerns were; how could the ban be enforced and not wanting to infringe on individual rights.  I agree…and I have never smoked.

A “special Town meeting” was held to vote on an ordinance to further regulate outdoor wood burning furnaces.  The vote was tabled by the Community members who attended for lack of objective facts for us to weigh.  The 1st Selectperson did not know the number of outdoor furnaces in Killingworth.  She presented no specific knowledge regarding complaints on any other furnaces in Killingworth.  In my opinion, it seemed this was an attempt to pass an ordinance because of one specific complaint.

I believe no one should impede on another individual’s rights and I will fight to protect those rights.  Common courtesy should be the course taken when there are issues between neighbors.

For the 1st Selectperson to contemplate legislating/taking away the rights of individuals without having all the facts is very concerning to me.  I will have all of the facts and exhaust all other reasonable means of dealing with an issue before I pass any new legislation in Killingworth.
