Spring Has Sprung at Killingworth Community Gardens

Several garden plots still remain available, registration next month

In the coming weeks soil will be broken at the Killingworth Community Gardens at Parmelee Farm in Killingworth.

Now in its fourth year, KCG is maintained by volunteers and gardeners, including garden administrator Peg Scofield.

"We provide sun and water, and you're on your own," Scofield said about the community garden's approach to sustainability.

Scofield said there are nearly five dozen plots - which are roughly 20 ft. by 20 ft. -and while many have already been purchased, there are still several available for interested gardeners.

In order to register for a plot you must live in Killingworth or belong to a group that operates in town. The fee is $30 for the growing season.

Registration will take place Saturday, April 2 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Killingworth Community Gardens, located at 465 Route 81 in Killingworth.

"People will stand in line to get a spot," Scofield said, adding that plots are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration will also be made available at Killingworth Town Hall.

Organizers have instituted a new policy this year, which requires gardeners to volunteer at least six hours of their time to community tasks during the growing season.

The Killingworth Community Gardens' mission is "to provide residents with an opportunity to come together for the purpose of food production, environmental education and to encourage multi-generational gatherings."
