Photos: CT DEEP Saltwater Fishing Day

Over 300 people participated in the CT DEEP Saltwater Fishing Day held at Fort Trumbull State Park Fishing Pier in New London. We even spotted a couple of our locals, one person's grandson was proud to catch a 12-1/2" Porgy!

The annual FREE Saltwater Fishing Day is part of DEEP’s No Child Left Inside® and Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education (CARE) programs that focus on introducing families to the outdoors.  Families took advantage of educational games, a touch tank, learned about fishing, crabbing and more!

A variety of saltwater fish were caught at the event including numerous Snapper Bluefish, both Summer and Winter Flounder, Porgies, Tinker Mackerel, Hickory Shad and Sea Robins.  Families also pulled in many Spider Crabs, a huge American Eel and a Mantis Shrimp!

Spotted was Bill Wimler, a Durham Volunteer Firefighter who brought his grandson, Travis Holder, age 7 to the event.  Bill’s grandson learned about the event after receiving his Youth Fishing Passport for his Birthday in May.

Travis brought in the largest Porgy of the day, measuring 12-1/2”.  It was a very exciting moment for Travis as he pulled in his fish.  “It was kind of hard pulling it in, but I got it!”  At the event, Travis learned about avoiding bones while cleaning his catch.

Another local that we spotted fishing at the event was Lee Vito, Middlefield Sanitarian.  His son, who was also helping at the event works for the Inland Fisheries Division of DEEP.
