Region 13 Board to Vote Wednesday on Appointing New Superintendent

The board is holding a special meeting at 8 p.m. on Oct. 16 where it will discuss the contract for the new Durham and Middlefield school chief.

Durham and Middlefield may know as early as this week who the new Region 13 school superintendent will be.

The Region 13 Board of Education is expected to meet at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the library at Coginchaug High School, for a special meeting surrounding the appointment of a new school chief.

The board will go into executive session for a "discussion of superintendent's contract" followed by an "appointment of RSD13 superintendent," according to the agenda sent to Patch from the school district.

This news follows a Middletown Press story last week in which the Region 13 Board Chairwoman Kerri Flanagan said a new superintendent could be appointed by the middle of the month. The board sought public input in the process, putting out a survey in which residents and school employees could voice what they wanted in an ideal candidate.

The district has been without a permanent school chief since June when former Superintendent Susan Viccaro stepped down to take a position in Newburyport, Mass. Her salary for the 2012-13 school year was $160,390

Ernest Perlini, a former superintendent in many other districts in Connecticut, has been filling in as the interim school chief since Vaccaro's departure.
