CRHS SOCCER : Girls Lose close match in Shoreline tournament

Girls bounced from Shoreline Tournament. Seeded #3 in State tournament set to begin this week.

The regular season meeting between Old Lyme and the CRHS girls soccer team was decided in overtime.  The Lady Devil needed only 2 minutes of the overtime period to break the tie, and eventually win the match.  The Shoreline Semi-final match on Wednesday afternoon at Coginchaug would not be settled that easily.

Coginchaug scored first when Victoria Buonanni slipped a ball through to Sophomore Midfielder Amy Arcari.  Amy beat the goal keeper to the ball by a split second and touched it past her and into the net.

Old Lyme showed more of the resiliency they displayed in game 1.  With 10 minutes left in the first half they chipped a ball over the head of CRHS Goalie Kara Mather.

Coginchaug was not ready to let Old Lyme have this game without a fight, and with just over 2 minutes to play in the half, Buonanni once again showed her leadership and sent outside Midfielder Kim Romanoff on a run down the right sideline.  Kim was tightly marked but was able to send a hard cross across the face of the goal, past the keeper.  She got a luck bounce off a defender's leg and the ball was deflected into the net.

Coginchaug's 2-1 lead was tenuous, as Old Lyme pressed hard throughout the second half.  CRHS had plenty of chances themselves, but it was Old Lyme who was able to convert.  With just 10 minutes left for CRHS to advance to the conference final, Old Lyme placed a masterfully hit hooking ball headed for the far upper corner of the goal frame.  Mather was able to get a hand on it, but it was just out of her reach and dropped into the goal.

The regulation time ended knotted at 2, as did both 10 minute overtime periods.  This game would be settled in a penalty kick shootout.

There were quality shots as well as spectacular saves by both teams, but in the end, Old Lyme was able to net one more shot that the Devils.

Old Lyme went on to beat Portland for the Conference title.

CRHS finished the regular season with an impressive 12-3-1 record, they were the Regular Season Shoreline Champions, #3 in Class S in the entire state and the ninth best Girls High School Soccer Team in the State of Connecticut.

They are seeded 3rd in the Class S tournament and have a first round bye.  They will play the winner of the match between #14 Windsor Locks and #19 Somers.  The game will be played at CRHS on Wednesday afternoon at 2PM due to the early sunset and absence of lights at the field.
