Coginchaug Boys Soccer Drops Home Opener

Hard work in the off season shows on the field, but not in the final score as CRHS boys lose to Cromwell 1-0 in the opening game of the Fall season.

The Coginchaug Boys Varsity Soccer team worked hard after last year's disappointing season.  Most of the guys played indoor soccer last winter.  They formed 2 teams and played in the Spring with both teams winning championships.

They played hard and the results started to show in the summer.  As the only class S school in the Nutmeg Tournament, they placed 3rd after narrowly missing the gold medal game.  In last week’s Amity Tournament they tied Class M East Haven, beat Class L Darien, beat class LL Trumbull and lost the championship match to LL Pomperaug 0-1.

But the games that count started under picture perfect skies on Wednesday afternoon at the equally beautiful Athletic Complex at CRHS.

Coginchaug held the ball in the offensive half for the better part of the game but the plays broke down just before they were able to release any effective shots.  Both defenses played solidly, with CRHS Captain Ben Taber and Junior Luke Fowler playing notably well.

Cromwell’s lone goal came mid-way through the first half when their forward took a touch on a perfect through ball and fired a laser shot to the far post from outside the 18 yard box.  CRHS GK Jeff Cummings played well; stopping 8 shots.

Coginchaug had only 4 solid shots on net, but they were also denied a few key chances.  Jr Forward Tyler Kovacs was wrongly called offsides on a great ball from Jr. Back Alex Markoski and later pulled down from behind on a breakaway just outside the penalty area.  (See the video highlights)
