Weekend Planner: A Fair, a Food Truck Invasion, a Jazz Quartet, and More

Check out what is going on in the region this weekend.

Haddam Neck Fair
Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday - This major agricultural fair will include street truck pulls, antique and modified tractor pulls, horse and oxen pulls, a petting zoo, amusements, a horse show, live music, food, animals, and more. Check out http://www.haddamneckfair.com/ for further details. Adults are $8, seniors (65 and older) are $7, and children under 12 are free. Parking is free and multi-day passes are available.

Food Truck Invasion

Friday, 4:30 p.m. - Start off your Labor Day weekend with this event. Food truck festivals have become very popular nationwide and as Connecticut has so many great food truck vendors, United Churches of Durham has invited four of them to land in its parking lot: The Whey Station (gourmet grilled cheese), Roughhouse (backyard BBQ with a twist), Fryborg (awesome Belgian fries), and NoRa Cupcake Company - rated Best of Connecticut 2013 by the Hartford Advocate. Vecchitto's Italian Ice will also be dished out.

Mushroom Walk
Saturday, 10 a.m. - Join Joe Lenoce of Connecticut Valley Mycological Society in search of mushrooms at Cedar Hill. During this educational hunt, Lenoce will discuss the basic types of fungi, where to find them and proper methods of collecting. After the walk, he will review identification resources while identifying any fungi collected. Admission is $5. Call 860-956-3311 or visit www.cedarhillfoundation.org for more information.

Yoron Israel Jazz Quartet
Saturday, 8 p.m. - Yoron Israel brings his group, “High Standards” to TBT as it tours throughout the United States and looks toward South African and European tours next year. His recent recording “VISIONS, The Music of Stevie Wonder” has received rave reviews and enthusiastic support from radio, print media and the public at large. “High Standards”, features Yoron Israel – drums, percussion; Laszlo Gardony – piano; Lance Bryant – saxophone; and Henry Lugo – bass. For certain engagements, the group is augmented with guest artists Thaddeus Hogarth – guitar and harmonica and Larry Roland – poet, as heard on “VISIONS.” Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Art Show: Living Yoga
Sunday, 10 a.m. - Pat (Divya Jyoti) DiFazio is a Middletown resident, a yoga teacher, and a teacher of yogic philosophy. Her artwork is a graphic expression of this philosophy. Divya’s book, entitled Living Yoga, will be available for sale, autographed by the author. All profits from the sale of her book go to support orphaned children and destitute elderly in India, through the Atma Vidya Ashram charity.

Giant Valley Polo
Sunday, 3 p.m. - Spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon watching polo in the shadow of Sleeping Giant State Park. You will see thoroughbreds with amazing bloodlines, such as Big Feathers whose great grand sire was the great Secretariat.
Gates open at 1 p.m. Bring a picnic or tailgate. Polo begins at 3 p.m. There is no admission fee and donations are optional. Parking is free. Just follow the signs to the parking area. Dress is very casual. Come when you can and leave when you have to. Children are welcome and pets must be on a leash.
