Valentines for Kids, a Taste of Durham, Music, and More

Friday, 8 p.m. - Join Donna Martin and Gail Wade in a rare split bill performance. These two veteran performers are joining forces for a night of rich songwriting, great guitar playing, and beautiful harmonies as they weave their way through their combined catalogs of folk, country, bluegrass, and beyond. During the past 20-plus years of performing, Wade is has gained the respect of audiences 
throughout the USA, Ireland, and several European countries. She is a strong guitarist and clawhammer banjo player with a rich and soulful voice. 

Valentines for Kids
Saturday, 10 a.m. - Don't go to the store to buy your valentines this year! Kids can make their own unique and personal Valentine's Day cards inspired by valentines from long ago at the CHS. Camp Wopowog - A Walk Back in Time
Saturday, 3 p.m. - Camp Wopowog was a rustic summer resort that accommodated 400 adult and children campers from the early 1900s to the early 1960s. Later it became Camp Halburn and Camp Ramah. In 1969 the state purchased it. The name Wopowog is derived from a Native American word that means "the crossing place” or "the land at the narrows." The old camp contained Adirondack style cabins, tennis and hand ball courts, high-dive platforms, docks, and boats. Warren Edwards grew up at the camp where his father was the caretaker. Taste of Durham
Saturday, 6:30 p.m. - Noted chef Joseph Aigner will be among the 21 chefs, caterers, and wine and spirits purveyors who will provide tastings at the 18h Annual Taste of Durham. Reservations at $35 each are limited and the event is always a sellout. Reservations are secured with a check and are made at the library. Attendance at the event is limited to adults. The entry fee includes unlimited food tastings as well as three servings from the bar. The party will go on regardless of weather. The Public Association of Library Supporters PALS, the event sponsors, just learned that Aigner, chef at Brew Bakers in Middletown, was named one of the Best Chefs in America for 2013 and 2014. He is a continuing contributor to the Taste of Durham. Longtime Durham contributors Cozy Corner Restaurant & Pizza, Durham Market and Caterers, Kim’s Cottage Confections, Lino’s Market and Caterers, Little Rooster (wine tasting), Perk on Main, Spice Catering, and Time Out Taverne are all returning. Returning from Middletown are Anoho Asian Noodle House, David Alan Catering, Cold Stone Creamery, Haveli of India, Tschudin Chocolates, and Sweet Harmony Cafe. Lyman Orchards Farm Market, from Middlefield, will again be offering their popular pies. New this year are caterer Kevin Smith and Durham Wine & Spirits (beer tasting), both of Durham, and Taino’s and Fiore’s II, both of Middletown. Brenda’s Main St. Feed will return with her take-home pet treats. Bruce Schmottlach and Deep Ellum will provide musical accompaniment for the evening. 

Ignacio Berroa Trio
Saturday, 8 p.m. - A native of Havana, Cuba, Ignacio Berroa has been recognized by many as one of the greatest drummers of our times. Born in 1953, he began his professional career in 1970 and moved to New York in 1980. Since then, he has recorded and played with a wide range of musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Danilo Perez, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Joe Lovano, Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Jackie McLean, Milt Jackson, and Tito Puente, among many others. Berroa’s first album as a leader [“Codes” (2006), on Blue Note Records] was nominated for the “Best Latin Jazz Album” Grammy Award in 2007. This concert at Wesleyan will be the Connecticut debut of Berroa’s trio, which features pianist Luis Perdomo and bassist Ricardo Rodriguez. There will be a pre-concert talk by Nestor Prieto MA ’14 at 7:15 p.m.
