Car Show Benefits Durham Firefighters

Fire company holds first annual Cruise Night showcasing roadsters, drop tops and more.

Gear heads, Rat Rod fans and classic car collectors pulled up to Durham's firehouse Friday night to gawk at collection of cars on display at the Durham Volunteer Fire Company's first annual car show.

"It's going great so far," said Fire Chief Robert Chadd, who was surprised at the turnout for "Cruise Night" - 55 cars on display - in spite of the sweltering weather.

Chadd said the event has the potential to become semi-annual with a show in the fall, before the Durham Fair.

The car show raised money for the volunteer fire company.

Kids, teens, parents and grandparents showed up to park their cars, enjoy the view and listen to classic tunes. Attendees enjoyed iced cream, hot dogs, hamburgers, soda and kettle corn while they mulled about, hats on, sunscreen applied, sweating through their t-shirts without even the faintest breeze.

The cars were cool, but the weather was not. Still, the heat didn't seem to phase most, though. Some pulled out their lawn chairs and soaked up some vitamin D, waiting for the raffle winners to be announced.

As for the cars, cars are meant to be driven above all else. But since you probably won't get the chance to get behind the wheel of one of those rare beauties, glossy and pristine, pampered and cherished by their owners, the best we can do is show some of them to you.
