Can Apple Maps Get You Where You Need to Go?

Read about manufacturing, Instagram's problems, and Australia.

Apple plans to bring manufacturing Jobs to US

For a decade now, most Apple products have been manufactured overseas in China, and recently, Brazil. In an interview with NBC’s Brian Williams, however, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced Apple’s plans to moving one of its existing Mac production lines to the US. This is a big deal, as many market analysts blame big corporations such as Apple for shipping US jobs overseas, thus keeping the employment rate up. I feel a little pride whenever I see something that says “Made in the USA”. Patriotism is a beautiful thing.

I highly recommend it!

Instagram goes Head-to-head with its Users

Earlier this week, popular photo sharing Instagram updated their "Terms of Use". Not a big deal, right? Wrong! It was discovered that it contained content that allowed Instagram to use its users content in advertisements without their consent. As you may have predicted, this did NOT go over well, with the site’s most popular user, Kim Kardashian, who expressed her disproval in a tweet and threatened to leave the service. This could mean a movement of her close to 6 million followers, to a different platform.

Facebook spent 1 billion (!) dollars in cash and stock to acquire Instagram. They need to find away to find a return on that investment. Ads seems like the best option for this problem, but we’ll see what happens in the future.

You can now navigate Australia! Google Maps (re)released for iOS devices.

When iOS 6 was announced (in June), one of the biggest changes was the switch from Google’s mapping solution, to Apple’s. Apple would need to create an app, and obtain all of the content. However, their first version was buggy, and Tim Cook wrote an open letter (http://www.apple.com/letter-from-tim-cook-on-maps/) to consumers and apologized for the fiasco. One of Apple’s executives was fired over “Mapgate”. The data was so poor, in fact, that the Australian police force warned people against using it, in the event they got so lost that they became stranded. Google worked hard for several months to perfect their version, and it is now available to download on the App Store.

Personally, I have had no issues with Apple’s app, but it is nice to know that are alternatives are out there.
