A Sure Sign of Spring – The Durham Farmers’ Market!

Thursday, May 12th, 3-6 p.m. Rhubarb & Asparagus make their debut. Musical Guest: Tonic

“No winter lasts forever; no spring skips it's turn.”  -- Hal Borland

It’s official…the calendar may say that spring arrived over a month ago, but it doesn’t quite feel like spring until you’re driving down Route 17 on a Thursday afternoon and see the tents up on the Durham Town Green.  Our vendors were out in full force last week with their CT grown and made products.   It was wonderful to see them greeting each other after what seemed like a winter without end;  handshakes and hugs were exchanged and more than once I overheard people say, “It’s good to be back.”  Customers were in equally high spirits, armed with their reusable bags and making their way through the stalls, their children playing on the green or sitting on blankets for an impromptu picnic dinner.  The quote of the day came from a second grade boy who never misses a market.  He ran up to me and said breathlessly, “Where’s the hot sauce guy?  He MUST have something new for me to try!”  He was not disappointed.

This Thursday’s market promises not to disappoint, either.  In our area, two of the first edibles to poke their heads out of the ground are asparagus and rhubarb.  Both will make their debut this week with the following vendors:

Little Something Catering - locally grown rhubarb and asparagus will be featured in their Rhubarb & Strawberry Tarts and Pies.  They will also have Asparagus Brie Quiche (with or without ham).

In addition, Dragon’s Blood Elixir will be bringing the second batch of the Unique Destiny Enchilada Sauce, slightly thicker and slightly spicier. No charge for new larger tasting portions.  Ann’s Good Stuff will feature the ‘Peace, Love and Citrus’ scent, as well as their new solid lotion.

Join these and our other fabulous vendors to stock up on your dairy, meat, seafood, spices, and baked goods.  Bring a blanket, eat some food, and listen to the band ‘Tonic’ as they set the mood.  The Farmers’ Market table will have recipe cards with asparagus and rhubarb recipes available for free (limited supply).

See you on the green!
