Granger, Kartiganer and Meeker Named 2013 Coginchaug Football Captains

By Coach John Bozzi

Captains for the Coginchaug football team’s 2013 season were elected during last week’s spring football practices.  Seniors Jack Granger, Ty Kartiganer and Tyler Meeker were selected by their teammates to lead the Blue Devils in the fall.

Jack Granger earned varsity letters as a sophomore and junior.  He started at running back last season, returned kicks and punts and led the team in rushing and scoring.  He was also named to the Hartford Courant’s weekly “Fab 15” honor roll for his five touchdown performance against Nonnewaug.  Granger is a three sport athlete and has lettered three times in baseball and twice in basketball.  As a junior, he served as one of the basketball team’s tri-captains and he will also captain the 2014 Coginchaug baseball team.

Ty Kartiganer is a two time varsity letter winner.  As a junior he started at inside linebacker and led the team in tackles and received the team’s “Most Improved” award.   Following his sophomore season Kartiganer worked tirelessly in the weight room and he matured into a hard hitting linebacker and a punishing tackler.  He played with such aggression that teammates and opponents alike learned to fear and respect him.

Tyler Meeker also lettered as a sophomore and junior.  Meeker took over as the starting quarterback in the second game of his sophomore season and earned the team’s “Rookie of the Year” award for his play that year.  In his junior year he broke a leg in spring practice but returned to his starting quarterback role in the fall.  A broken wrist suffered in the second game on the 2012 season kept Meeker out of action for only two weeks as he played the second half of the season in a cast.  Meeker also earned a varsity letter in track as a sophomore.

Granger, Kartiganer and Meeker also excel in the classroom.  Each of them has been named as a Scholar Athlete for all three of their football seasons. Granger and Kartiganer were also named to the 2012 Pequot League All-Academic Team and Granger was chosen by the Coginchaug administration to receive the Connecticut Association of Schools Leadership Award for his outstanding student leadership during the past school year.
