Durham's Ben Conroy Shoots Final Round 65, Finishes Second at Connecticut Open

Durham native Ben Conroy nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback this week when he erased a 10-stroke lead in the final round of the 2013 Connecticut Open Championship at Torrington Country Club in Goshen, only to fall to the eventual winner, Jeff Curl of Ellington, in a playoff.

Conroy, a Coginchaug High School graduate who earned his degree from the University of Delaware this spring, shot a competitive course record 65 in the final round of the 54-hole tournament held July 29-31.

“It was one of those days; the putts went in and everything went my way,” Conroy told Golf Week. “When I saw the leaderboard on the 14th tee, I was one stroke back and at that point, I knew I was in it.”

Curl would sink a 35-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win the tournament.
