VIDEO: Coginchaug Football Crushes Lewis Mills 40-0

Blue Devils dominate on offense, defense and special teams.

The Coginchaug Blue Devils football team scored on offense, defense and special teams on Saturday en route to a 40-0 win over Lewis Mills (Burlington).

"We score twice defensively, we scored on a punt return and the offense scored the three times, really, that we had the ball in the first half. You can't ask for much more than that," said Coginchaug head coach John Bozzi.

The Blue Devils (2-1) were physical from the start and built the 40-0 lead before halftime.

"We were disappointed with Hyde and that was a real tough game to lose 7-0, so we came out today and we all wanted to make up for that loss," said Coginchaug senior Jack Granger who scored the game's first touchdown with a 15-yard-run in the first quarter.

The junior running back also returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Granger finished the game with 41 yards on 6 carries and has 7 TDs on the season.

The Blue Devils defense was led by senior co-captains Ian Augur and Sean Harper, who stymied the Spartans (0-3) offense. Lewis Mills managed to move the ball just 14 yards (-27 yards rushing and 41 yards passing).

"The line on both sides wins the game. That's how we play," said Augur.

"Our defense has been strong all year. The offensive line today played well, they played a defense they hadn't shown yet and these kids made the adjustments and the backs ran hard."

Harper led the Blue Devils rushing attack with 65 yards on 5 carries, including a 39 yard touchdown in the second quarter that put Coginchaug ahead 20-0.

Sophomore quarterback Jake Ober rushed for 42 yards and a touchdown. The Blue Devils finished the game with 184 yards on 28 rushes.

Jeff Grumm and Devin Rodrigue both scored defensive touchdowns for Coginchaug in the second quarter. Grumm picked up a fumble and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown and Rodrigue found the endzone after picking off a Lewis Mills pass and returning it 30 yards.

Coginchaug hosts East Hampton/Vinal Tech next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
