Superintendent: Durham and Middlefield Schools are Safe

Work continues to remove snow and ice from roofs

Workers will continue to remove snow and ice from school rooftops this week in Durham and Middlefield, but Regional School District 13 Superintendent Susan Viccaro told Patch today that all of the district's facilities have been deemed safe.

"We actually had a structural engineer come in to check the buildings and they're all okay," Viccaro said.

Students and teachers have been shifted around as the work is being done, but not due to any potential danger.

"While we've had workers on the roof we've been moving kids around because of the noise. It's very loud," Viccaro said.

Parents were updated on the progress by email today. A note written on the district's website also read: "All large function areas such as cafeterias, gymnasiums and the auditorium have been cleared."

Viccaro told Patch, "Brewster and Korn school are all done. We hope we're done with the rest of the schools this week."

Viccaro said the district has canceled some outside events at schools as a precaution.

Unlike some schools in the state, RSD13 has not canceled classes over the buildup of snow and ice on roofs. The district, however, has canceled classes eight times so far this year due to inclement weather.

As of Monday, the last day of school is scheduled for June 24. Students will also need to make up four snow days during the April break.
