Schools Closed Again Due to Storm

Winter weather leads to cancellation of classes

All schools in Regional School District's 13 and 17 were closed today due to the storm.

As of 9:30 a.m. plow crews remained busy, as they attempted to clear roads of the slushy mix of snow and ice.

"We're hanging in there," said Killingworth road foreman Walt Adametz. "We came in shortly after 3 a.m. We've got to keep out there until the temperature warms up."

Adametz said temperatures remained a degree or so below freezing as of 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, adding that crews have spent most of the morning scraping the roads and dropping a mix of sand and salt.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Northern Middlesex County until 1 p.m. Tuesday, when temperatures are expected to move above freezing. According to the NWS conditions are expected to "remain treacherous into this early afternoon."

Gov. Dannel Malloy ordered a partial activation of the State Emergency Operations Center to monitor power outages and road conditions.

“I am urging everyone to take it slow on the roads, and if you don’t have to go out, please consider staying home until the plows have a chance to get through our roads following the morning commute,” Malloy said.

Malloy also asked residents to alert authorities to any drooping power lines and be mindful of snow piled up on flat surfaces, including roofs.
