February Break Reduced in Two-Year Calendar

In approving the school calendars for 2012-2013 and 2013-2014, school officials have all but ended the tradition of giving students a week off in mid-February.

The days of weeklong February vacations appear to be over for District 13 students.

On Wednesday night, the Board of Education approved calendars for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years that reduce the winter recess to just two days, with an additional day off and a delayed opening for staff development.

School officials took the rare step of approving the two-year calendar in an effort to give parents more time to plan ahead.

"We haven't done this before and I thought this would be a nice way to do it particularly because we have shortened February, that it gave people a chance to plan," said Superintendent Susan Viccaro. "We have tried to be fairly consistent with what we've done in the past."

After receiving a good amount of feedback last year prior to approving the current school calendar, school officials did not receive any feedback this year after publishing the two-year calendar on the district's website.

The calendars include five two-hour delayed openings for professional development. The last day of school is scheduled for June 11 in both calendars provided no make up days are necessary.
