On Friday, May 17, 2013, two local students from Memorial Middle School were honored at the State Capitol by the Secretary of the State, Denise W. Merrill. Each student was a winner in the Secretary of State's 2013 Essay Contest. Of the more than 400 students that entered the contest statewide, five were selected from the Third Congressional District which includes Middlefield and Durham among other towns. Kerry Turecek was awarded third place, and Cameron Nielsen was awarded honorable mention
