In a letter to fellow board members Kelsey wrote, "About three weeks ago I received a medical diagnosis from my physicians that has given me cause to reassess and reevaluate all the priorities in my life. I've come to the conclusion that the most important thing for me to do right is now is to concerntrate fully on my health and to spend as much time as I can with my wife and children.

"Therefore at this time and effective immediately I am resigning from my position as chairman of the Board of Education for Regional School District 17. "

Kelsey's announcement comes just two months after he was elected as the board's chairman.

"I'm incredibly greatful to Keith for his service to the district. I'd like to thank Keith both personally and on behalf of the district and say what an incredible loss this is for this board and this district but we're all with Keith," an emotional Thiery said after reading the letter.

Board members spent several minutes thanking Kelsey and reflecting on some of his contributions to the district.

"He was extremely positive. He was always supportive. A wondeful sense of humor, a wonderful sense of duty," said Susan Dean, a fellow board member from Killingworth.

The board has yet to elect a new chairman but vice chairman Jonathan Wintsch served as interim chair during the meeting.

The next board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Killingworth will hold a town meeting on Monday, March 5 at Killingworth Elementary School to elect a new board member.
