Grand Opening of New Athletic Complex Highlights Homecoming Weekend

Coginchaug High School Class of 2011 welcomed back to celebrate opening of new field before Saturday's football game.

After years of planning and construction, the track, field and tennis courts at Coginchaug Regional High School will be the backdrop to the school's first Homecoming weekend.

A brief ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, before kickoff of the game between Coginchaug and Saybrook/Westbrook.

"Last year, the CRHS class of 2011 seemed to come close to actually playing on this new facility. Soccer and football seniors had hoped to play at least one game on this field. As the season ended there was a little heartbreak. The graduating seniors never got to play on the field that dangled in front of them through their years at Coginchaug," says Bill Currlin, building committee chairman and former board of education member.

"These were the ones that showed up at hearings and spelled out “vote yes” with their bodies on the old field. They were there to support the effort and to absorb the local critics and naysayers. It was decided that they would be welcomed back to the first Homecoming and recognized as a part of the class of 2012 and a member of this team."
