Esposito Strikes Out 16 in Blue Devils' 7-0 Win Over Lyman Memorial

Coginchaug senior dominant on the mound as team advances to semifinal of Class S state tournament.

Coginchaug's Lauren Esposito has won enough games with her bat but her arm was the deciding factor in the Blue Devils' 7-0 win over Lyman Memorial on Friday afternoon.

The senior struck out 16 Bulldogs and gave up just five hits in a dominating performance that has put the school two wins away from a state championship.

In the third inning with the Blue Devils leading 1-0, Coginchaug's Mari Handley hit a base clearing double to give her team a 4-0 lead (see video).

Kayla Votto added to her team's lead after she smacked a deep fly ball to left centerfield for a triple. She scored on a wild pitch and finished the game batting 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

The Blue Devils will take on Morgan in a semifinal matchup on Monday.

Correction: We originally reported that Esposito struck out 15 batters due to an incomplete box score. We apologize for the error.

I would suggest to parents to donate a book to the classroom or school library in their child's nameRead More to celebrate the child's birthday, or other significant event, instead of sending in cupcakes or other sweets.
