Coginchaug Girls' Dominate Old Saybrook

Biesak, Esposito lead Lady Blue Devils in scoring

Coginchaug pulled off a convincing 41-16 win against Old Saybrook on Tuesday night at Old Saybrook High School. The Blue Devils improved to 2-0 on the season, as the Rams fell to 1-2.

Coginchaug started forward Amanda Boyle, and guards Audrey Biesak, Sam Mancinelli, Lauren Esposito, and Jessica Solomon.  The Rams started guards Taylor Beck, Kelly Ratchford, and Cori Reid, and forwards Kayla McAvoy and Beth Morrisson.

The game opened with six straight points from Coginchaug's Audrey Biesak. A three-pointer from Old Saybrook's Taylor Beck put the Rams on the scoreboard. But the Blue Devils' three-point lead soon turned into a seven-point lead due to good judgment.  Although the team loves to run and push the ball up the floor, they pulled the ball out and ran an offense when the quick basket wasn't apparent.  The Blue Devils ran solid cuts and had good looks at the basket. At the end of the quarter Coginchaug was ahead 16-5.

The second quarter began as an even battle, with the Blue Devils and Rams matching each other basket for basket. But Old Saybrook soon got in foul trouble, testing the depth of the team's bench and allowing Coginchaug to shoot one-and-one's frequently. Again, with good judgment and great hustle on defense, Coginchaug increaded their lead to 26-10 at halftime.

The Blue Devils came out strong to start the second half, with four straight points from Lauren Esposito. Old Saybrook continued to struggle on offense due to foul trouble and Coginchaug's hustle on defense. The Blue Devils were able to keep the Rams off the scoreboard for most of the third quarter, until forward Kayla McAvoy hit one of her two foul shots.  Coginchaug lead 33-11 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter started like the second, generally even, but four minutes in Audrey Biesak hit a three-pointer to get the Blue Devils going. Coginchaug maintained a lead effectively by rebounding hard and minimizing fouls on defense.  They ran the floor when the opportunity presented itself and found most of their success in fast breaks. The Blue Devils' speed and patience and offense ended with a 41-16 win.

Coginchaug has already seen great improvements in judgment from last season.  By showing good decision making on offense and defense, the team has pulled off two convincing wins so far this season.  Coginchaug finished with 13 points from Audrey Biesak, 12 points from Lauren Esposito, 6 points from Sam Mancinelli, 4 points from Morgan Kuehnle, 4 points from Jessica Solomon, and 2 points from Kim Romanoff.
