The Old Ornaments

I found myself looking at the most beautiful Christmas tree last week at a very high end department store.  I thought to myself, why can't I have a tree like that in my own home...I mean,  I am an interior designer,  I should have a perfect designer tree!
Needless to say, when I arrived home and began to go through all of the ornaments that my children and I had collected over the years,  it dawned on me..Christmas trees aren't supposed to be "designer."   Our trees are a tradition and a reflection of our lives and the memories that we make each Christmas season with our family and friends.  As I began to unpack my own family ornaments,  I found the ornament that I received at the annual ornament exchange I used to attend.   I found another ornament that a friend brought to me as a thank you gift for driving her kids to after school activities while she was working full-time.  I unpacked the ornaments that my kids chose each year after they visited Santa up at the Pound Ridge Nursery in Pound Ridge, NY.  Each and every ornament had its own story and memory attached to it and each and every ornament brought a smile to my face.

As a designer its  sometimes hard to just let things be "what they are".  We are always trying to make them "look a little better" or "fit in with a certain look or style".  My advice for our Christmas trees is to decorate them however you like!!!!  Fill them with ornaments, glass balls, angels or reindeer...whatever makes you feel happy and brings a smile to you and your family.  Thats what this season is all about.  Let is sparkle and let it shine...Tis the season!!

See you next week with more tips on making your home your own.
