Spring Cleaning

Now that spring has officially arrived, spring cleaning at the barn has officially begun. I say officially because moving things around in one's locker in an attempt to make it look like cleaning had taken place does not count. Sure my locker looks organized, but what really lurks in the bucket on that unreachable shelf is a mystery. I thought long and hard over the winter months about de-bugging my locker and de-molding my tack. Unfortunately since I cannot move (nor clean) objects by casting a magical gaze upon them, I am ashamed to say that the bugs accumulated and the mold grew. But alas, there is hope. Spring is here, the weather is warming and an abundance of products are available to make my locker and my horse shine like new!

I remember, back in the day, when there was only one kind of saddle soap, one equine shampoo, one hoof dressing, one fly spray...one brand of any product...from which a horse owner could choose. In fact, whenever I smell tar it immediately takes me back to the barn at the boarding school I attended because that tar based hoof dressing was all that we knew and used. Today, there is an abundance of hoof dressings to shine, soften, strengthen and disinfect our horses' hooves. The one I use now smells like barbeque sauce and beware...it is not safe to use it around dinner time because stomach grumbles can be heard from many stalls away!

I think it is a good thing that horse owners are afforded the choice of so many equine products. As our society becomes more ecologically conscious, I would like to think that we take more care now in choosing what cleaning products we use on our material goods and my hope is that even more thought is put into what we use on our horses.
