State Begins Draining Lake Beseck in Middlefield

The lake will be at a lower level for a large part of 2013 so the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection can renovate the dam.

State environmental workers began draining Lake Beseck Friday morning in preparation for a $2.6 million state project to renovate the Middlefield lake's dam.

The lake will be drawn down approximately 14-15 feet so that the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection can begin the renovation project. Officials say it will stay at the lower levels until late 2014 due to the length of the construction process.

Amy Poturnicki, one of the residents of the Lake Beseck area, posted a video and some photos of the dam draining on her blog on Durham-Middlefield Patch.

"Take advantage of this transition period to educate your children of the dangers of walking out onto areas of the lake bed after it is lowered," Poturnicki wrote. "Some areas of the lake contain muck that is quite deep."
