Middlefield Gets $65,000 in State Aid for Affordable Housing

The aid will go toward improvements at Sugarloaf Terrace.

Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced the state has awarded approximately $18,335,000 in grants and loans to help fund thirteen affordable housing developments in the state-sponsored housing portfolio — including one development in Middlefield.

The lion's share of the funding — $17 million — is going toward housing developments in Danbury, New London, Hartford and Westport.

The remaining $1.6 million will be awarded in predevelopment grants for costs such as architectural design, environmental studies, and other early-stage development costs to several other communities, including Norwich, Naugatuck, Enfield and Glastonbury.

Of that $1.6 million, the Middlefield Housing Authority was awarded approximately $65,000 for Sugarloaf Terrace, the state said.

“Increasing the availability of affordable housing is a top priority because the benefits extend far beyond the families and communities immediately impacted,” Malloy said.  “More and more, we understand the economic results — studies show that affordable housing increases spending and employment opportunities, boosts revenue for local governments, and reduces foreclosures and the negative associated costs.  Expanded housing options for our workforce also give employers a competitive advantage when trying to attract top talent to their companies.”

The funding will require State Bond Commission approval, and the tax credit awards remain subject to approval by the CHFA Board of Directors.
