Elected Officials Take Oath of Office in Middlefield

Sunday's ceremony marks 'regeneration of our government' first selectman says.

Newly elected officials were sworn into office early Sunday afternoon during a brief ceremony at the Middlefield Community Center.

Probate Judge Joseph Marino began the 2 p.m. ceremony by administering the oath of office to Town Clerk Donna Golub, who then took over duties to swear-in the remaining eight elected officials.

Joining Golub were Board of Finance members Alice Malcolm, Jim Irish and Mary Wolak, Treasurer Ellen Waff, Mark Myjak, who was elected to the Board of Assessment Appeals, Selectman Ed Bailey and Dave Burgess and First Selectman Jon Brayshaw, who was elected to his fourth term on Nov. 8.

"What this row of people up in front symbolize is a calling greater than themselves," Brayshaw told an audience of several dozen people gathered for the ceremony. "We are the citizen government that our country is founded on. We are the everyday regular people who pick up the torch and aim our effort at something bigger than ourselves."

Brayshaw joked that his prepared remarks had been shortened from four pages when he was first elected in 2005 to just one page on Sunday.

Following the brief ceremony those in attendance enjoyed refreshments provided by Gewn Brayshaw.
