Teen Seriously Injured in Early Morning Crash in Durham

Police say vehicle involved in accident was unregistered and did not have license plates.

State police are investigating a one car crash in Durham early Saturday morning that left two teens injured including one of them seriously, police said.

The driver, identified as Kevin Wiknik, 18, of Durham, was airlifted to a local hospital by Life Star helicopter with unknown injuries. His passenger, Dylan Cronin, 18, of Haddam, suffered minor cuts and scrapes in the accident.

The crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. along Foot Hills Road, about a half-mile from Millers Pond.

According to police, Wiknik was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed in a 1992 Mitsubishi 3000 when he lost control and slammed the car head on into a tree. The vehicle came to rest after going airborne and hitting a wire guardrail.

State Police Sgt. Sal Calvo said the impact from the crash caused the vehicle's engine to be dislodged from the car.

Cronin initially fled the scene of the accident on foot, Calvo said, but was caught nearby by authorities. He was transported to a local hospital.

Police are still investigating the accident but said the vehicle was unregistered and did not have any license plates. No arrests have been made.

Any one who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call state police at 860-399-2100.
